Slovakia: manufacturing productivity, cost and AI adoption in 2026 data

The world's largest car producer per head of population, with the fastest growth in manufacturing value added among the seven countries in 2025 — and an industry association warning that decline has begun.

In shortSlovak manufacturing produced €22.1bn of gross value added in 2025, up 4.2%, 18.1% of the economy, with 496.5 thousand workers. Value added per worker was €44.6k, about 50% of the EU-27 level. Hourly labour cost rose 13.5% from 2023 to 2025. 15.8% of manufacturers used AI, close to the EU-27 rate of 17.3%.

Four assembly plants operate in Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra and Žilina; Volvo's plant in Košice is under development. Eurostat counts 89,803 manufacturing enterprises for 2023, but most are sole traders, so the figure is not a count of factories.

The pressure on Slovak plants

The industry's own warning. In January 2026 ZAP said that "the process of decline … has begun". It named a weak cost base, the skilled workforce and sustainable production as areas where Slovakia lags, and forecast 1.02 million vehicles in 2026, down from about 1.07 million (The Slovak Spectator, 13 January 2026).

Labour cost. Hourly labour cost in manufacturing rose from €17.0 in 2023 to €19.3 in 2025, +13.5%, against +9.0% in the EU-27 (Eurostat lc_lci_lev). In 2025 alone it rose 6.6%, while value added per worker rose 5.6% — the smallest gap of the seven countries (our calculation from lc_lci_lev, nama_10_a10 and nama_10_a10_e; nominal EUR).

Productivity. Whole-economy productivity per hour was 81.1 in 2025 (80.3 in 2024), EU-27 = 100 (Eurostat tesem160), second only to Slovenia among the seven.

Energy. €0.219/kWh excluding VAT for the 2,000–19,999 MWh band in the second half of 2025, the second-highest of the seven after Hungary and above the EU-27 average of €0.192 (Eurostat nrg_pc_205).

People. The manufacturing job vacancy rate was 0.7% in 2025, below the EU-27 rate of 1.5% (Eurostat jvs_a_rate_r2). ZAP's concern is skills, not headcount.

Digital and AI maturity

15.8% of Slovak manufacturers with 10+ employees used at least one AI technology in 2025, up from 8.1% in 2024 (Eurostat isoc_eb_ain2). Across all sectors the figure is 18.0%. Eurostat broadened the AI questions in 2025, so the near-doubling partly reflects measurement. The 2025 level, close to the EU-27 17.3%, is the comparable figure.

The digital base is thinner: 64.2% of enterprises reached at least basic digital intensity in 2024, against 73.7% in the EU-27 (Eurostat isoc_e_dii). We did not find a recent national Industry 4.0 survey with hard figures. Local vendors commonly describe the starting point as zber výrobných dát — production data collection.

What this means for a mid-size plant in Slovakia

  • Plan for lower volumes. If ZAP's forecast holds, fixed costs will be spread over fewer parts in 2026. Know your break-even output per line and which losses you can remove without capital spending.
  • Make changeovers visible. Record changeover start, end and reason on your constraint lines, so you can see whether changeover time grows as volumes fall and batches shrink.
  • Measure energy per part. At €0.219/kWh, idle consumption during short-time work or low-volume shifts is a direct cost.
  • Use AI where the data already exist. With adoption near the EU average, pick use cases where you already hold a clean machine and quality history. Where you do not, collecting that history is the first project.
  • Compare local options. Slovak suppliers include Inseko, optiMES (DATANOVA), Minerva (QAD), IoT Industries and AutoERP, plus integrators. Questions

How productive is Slovak manufacturing compared with the EU?
Value added per manufacturing worker was €44.6k in 2025, about 50% of the EU-27 figure of €89.3k (our calculation from Eurostat nama_10_a10 and nama_10_a10_e, nominal EUR). Whole-economy productivity per hour was 81.1 against an EU-27 index of 100 (Eurostat tesem160, 2025).
How many cars does Slovakia produce?
About 1.07 million in 2025, up 7.7%, or 196 per 1,000 inhabitants. ZAP forecasts 1.02 million for 2026 (ZAP via AutoFoxNews and The Slovak Spectator, 2026).
How many Slovak manufacturers use AI?
15.8% of manufacturers with 10+ employees used at least one AI technology in 2025, against 17.3% in the EU-27 (Eurostat isoc_eb_ain2). The 2025 survey was broader than 2024's, so the rise from 8.1% overstates real growth.
Is MSV Nitra taking place in 2026?
No. The organiser, Agrokomplex, cancelled the 2026 edition of the international engineering fair in Nitra.
